Introduction to Information Management for Doctoral Students

Doctoral students interact with vast quantities of information from numerous sources that come in many formats and in various languages. It is a daunting challenge to manage and document information repeatedly and for multiple projects, including doctoral dissertation research as well as unimagined projects in the distant future–a problem reported by established scholars who find they want to use a source they encountered while working on a past project, but might not have used in the final, published version, and can no longer precisely identify and therefore retrieve. In this session, we will review different types of citations and participants will learn how to choose among the various citation management systems. In addition, instructors will discuss note-taking strategies to curate and store information effectively. This session is open to all doctoral students.

Conducting Literature Reviews: Research Strategies for Doctoral Students

There are many approaches to conducting a near comprehensive literature review. The spark could be a footnote, an online reference to a case study or through informal discussions with advisors and peers. Tracking published literature in any discipline or subject matter requires strategy. In this session, students will learn about general and subject-specific indexing and abstracting resources, search techniques, and interacting with collections held at the University of Illinois and beyond. This session is open to all doctoral students.

Editing Your Manuscript: Arts and Humanities Edition

You begin with a spark—a series of questions or an idea—that ignites notes, sketches, words, paragraphs, and drafts: as a writer and scholar, you laboriously shape the research narrative, editing page-to-page, and deliberating (at times for hours) on perfect word choice. This process of writing and editing your manuscript can be daunting, time consuming, and overwhelming. Come join the conversation as we explore individual works and perspectives from published scholars on the drafting and editing process.  Each segment of The Manuscript series will feature 1-2 scholars from Arts and Humanities, Life Sciences, Social Sciences, and Engineering and Physical Sciences. The Manuscript series will run in conjunction with the Writing in the Disciplines.
